Is your wood safe to cook with? Your label says it’s been treated? Are chemicals used to treat your wood?

Our wood is all natural, safe to burn, and safe to cook with.

The treating method referred to on our label is Heat treated. Heat treating refers to the method of drying wood with heat in kilns to control the spread of invasive insects. The makers of heat-treated firewood hold a legal compliance agreement that the wood is heated to a certain core temperature for a certain amount of time. The heat treatment standard used by the USDA is 60 minutes at 140 degrees Fahrenheit. The State of NH Department of Agriculture’s heat treatment standard requires meeting the standards set in place by the state of MAINE and NEW YORK which is more stringent; 160 degrees Fahrenheit for 75 minutes.

These temperatures ensure that any insect larvae are extinguished. These approved standards are in place to help the control of the spread of invasive bugs, specifically the emerald ash borer and Asian longhorn beetle.  Ossipee Mountain Firewood™ is certified by both the USDA and NH Dept. of Agriculture.
